What is Age of Rust?

So for those of you who might be new to the project… Age of Rust is a single player first person adventure game that combines puzzles and action. It’s similar to Firewatch™or Alien Isolation™. Age of Rust features blockchain assets (using Enjin on Ethereum) for game items, these game items are cryptoitems which are stored on a players wallet independent of the game. You play as a rogue bounty hunter in search of crypto treasures, which require you to explore abandoned ships, mysterious caverns, and ruins on far away worlds.

The before times…

In the first three quarters, we completed a few large milestones and still have more planned to complete before the end of the year.

  • Counterparty to Enjin migration Players had an opportunity to migrate from Counterparty to Ethereum using our migration wizard. All the 11 existing tokens on counterparty were brought over to Ethereum. Token holders were required to burn tokens on the bitcoin blockchain to receive the new tokens on the Ethereum blockchain.
  • GDC Conference — Attendees were able to play and test out Age of Rust at the game developers conference in San Francisco along with other blockchain games at the Enjin booth. Players got a first hand chance to play and solve puzzles for a reward at the booth.

  • Released the playable pre-alpha demo — The pre-alpha demo was the first release to include the Enjin wallet linking, unlocking content based on token ownership, and blockchain rewards for solving puzzles. We recently unlocked the demo so that anyone who owns Rustbits can play the game today. https://www.ageofrust.games/demoalpha

  • Over 400k Enjin coins have been put into minting new items and rewards for Age of Rust. Players will be able to purchase some of these items in the in-game store or win some of the larger Enjin-backed items as trophies for complex puzzles.

Upgrades for Beta and beyond…

Based on some of the feedback from the pre-alpha, there was a need to refocus some of the gameplay to balance out the puzzle aspects with the action pieces of the game. Part of the pre-alpha was to test whether or not there was too much combat and there was, so the action sequences and combat have been somewhat muted down to focus more on puzzle advancement.

  • Less combat, more puzzles.
Puzzley goodness…

The next big item is something that everyone has asked for since the beginning of the game, which is the ability to spend Rustbits inside the game and buy game items.

  • Ability to spend Rustbits inside the game.

Players will be able to come across in-game kiosks where they can purchase a variety of gear and tools to help them search for treasure and solve puzzles. Players can also sell items via the Enjin Marketplace directly from their Enjin wallet.

  • Splitting the game up into Seasons

To push the game release up and also allow for additional functionality later, it was decided to split the game up into 3 seasons. The first season will contain the first 3 missions from the game.

Some of the other things that are being added to the Beta include some character animation and voice-overs for cut-scenes and other places in the game to heighten the story line and dramatic elements.

  • Motion capture and voiceovers for characters

Even though Age of Rust is a small Indie game, the intent is to elevate it areas to make it better game where possible.

We’ve also added an additional mini-game to Age of Rust around the hacking mechanic.

Mini-game nanobot maze

Players who own a nanobot on the blockchain, can hack into some locks and other equipment where you pilot a little nano-spider though a procedurally generate maze.

Additional work has also gone into some of the more environmental aspects of the game such as sound and music as well to help round out the players experience in several different areas of the game.

Environments still under development

Also, many of the little annoyances in the pre-alpha have also been addressed as well. So linking the Enjin wallet has been greatly enhanced so that the game now detects when a player has linked the wallet. Other enhancements include things like separate sliders for granular control of the volume as well as inverting the mouse.

The UI is also getting revamped along the lines of detecting interactive items. So things that you can inspect, pickup, and examine will now have an icon and on-screen instructions on how to interact with it. This makes the game friendlier to learn and play without have to look at custom keyboard mapping controls to see how to interact with something.

When is the Beta?

Work and development is continuing to build Age of Rust and while we wanted to release the Beta in October, it still needs some work before it’s complete so we are looking at December now for the beta release. Players with any mission card token, or an Age of Rust MFT token, or more than 1000 Rustbits will be able to play the demo.
